Mr. Platformer is a free adventure game created by indie developer Terry Cavanagh. It's a retro platformer title that draws inspiration from some of the most popular classic games from consoles like Sega and Atari. As such, it also features charming 8-bit pixel graphics and art style.
Like Celeste and Super Meat Boy, Mr. Platformer is all about taking on various platforming challenges with the goal of finishing stages as fast as possible and with the highest scores they can achieve. It also boasts simple and intuitive controls and is playable online or as a downloadable game.
Old-school platforming
Mr. Platformer is a platformer that takes cues from classic games, particularly, the popular Atari console as evident with its 8-bit graphics and presentation. In it, you take charge of the titular character as you take on all kinds of platforming challenges across 40 levels. Each one features unique environmental hazards and traps that you need to overcome to get to the next stage.
For controls, Mr. Platformer is as simple as can be, you use the Left and Right Arrow keys for movement and the Spacebar to jump. You are given four lives to manage for your run, and you will have to start over again if you lose at any point. Aim for the highest score by collecting coins and stars scattered throughout the stages.
Aside from the traps and platforming challenges to overcome, some levels will require you to collect keys to unlock doors to the next stage. Whether you opt for the online version or the downloadable one, the experience will be the same. That said, some players will find the game too short since most levels only take a couple of minutes to finish.
Ode to the classics
If you grew up during the 8-bit era of gaming, Mr. Platformer is a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane. The graphics are charming, the controls are responsive, and the gameplay is deceptively simple. For everyone else, it offers a glimpse of what games were like during those days. Needless to say, it gets an easy recommendation.
